Raleigh, N.C. – The North Carolina General Assembly approved three nominations to the State Board of Education (SBOE) put forward by Gov. Roy Cooper on Wednesday in a joint session of the state Senate and House of Representatives.
The Governor’s nominations of Wendell Hall, J.B. Buxton, and Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers to the SBOE were approved in the joint session of the General Assembly.
J.B. Buxton is the founding principal of the Education Innovations Group, a consulting practice focused on state education strategies for Pre-K-12 and postsecondary public education.
Wendell Hall is the only individual to serve as president of both the North Carolina School Boards Association and the North Carolina Association of School Administrators.
Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers is the president and CEO of Tri-County Community College.
Two other current board members re-nominated by the Governor – James Ford and Jill Camnetz – were not voted on and will continue to serve on the SBOE pending further action by the General Assembly.
“I am happy the General Assembly is moving forward in confirming the Governor’s appointments to the State Board of Education,” said Rep. Craig Horn (R-Union), a North Carolina House Education Committee co-chair.
“These nominees possess an array of experience and perspectives that will serve the people of North Carolina well.”
Senator Deanna Ballard (R-Watauga), a co-chair of the North Carolina Senate Education/Higher Education Committee, also released a statement.
“Each of the nominees confirmed today have distinguished backgrounds in education and are qualified for the role of board member,” Sen. Ballard said.
“They appear to be without conflicts of interest and willing to follow the laws of our state and serve the best interests of our students, and we appreciate the time they spent with members of the Senate during this process.”
