Speaker Moore to Host Cleveland County Town Hall on Potential Airport Rd. Bridge Over Highway 74 Bypass in Shelby

Raleigh, N.C. – State House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) will host Cleveland County officials and residents on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers of the Cleveland County Administration Building to discuss a potential overpass reconnecting Airport Road over the new Highway 74 Bypass.

“The recent failure of the bridge on Highway 180 connecting Airport Road and Highway 150 in Shelby has exposed a serious transportation issue for Cleveland County,” Speaker Moore said, “affecting travel and emergency response times for businesses and residents that rely on Airport Road.”

During construction of the Highway 74 Bypass, Airport Road was severed and traffic diverted to Highway 180.  When a Highway 180 bridge over the railroad was recently damaged, the already increasing traffic from the Airport Road detour pushed even more traffic to adjacent city and county roads, creating serious transportation mobility concerns for county officials, residents, and businesses.

Speaker Moore and other General Assembly members will seek input from local residents, businesses, first responders, transportation officials, and county leaders on a plan to reconnect Airport Road with a bridge over the Highway 74 Bypass.
