Raleigh, N.C. – The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) released their statewide education achievement report today before a meeting of the State Board of Education. The report showed that for the 12th consecutive year North Carolina has continued improving and the student graduation rate for 2016-17 was 86.5%.
“North Carolina’s school system continues to deliver a learning environment that encourages success and workplace preparedness for students. With more and more students graduating each year we know that incremental policy changes continue to have a positive impact for our students,” said North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore.
“With our student graduation rate now at 86.5% we will need to really focus our efforts to ensure student achievement can continue to rise in North Carolina. We look forward to continuing our work with Superintendent Mark Johnson to identify additional innovations to reduce achievement gaps across the state.”
The report also informed the State Board that North Carolina’s school grades have continued to climb, as the percentage of schools rated with A’s and B’s increased compared to a decrease in our schools rated with C’s, D’s, and F’s. This past session, the North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation aimed to continue North Carolina on that path. That initiative, titled the North Carolina Innovation School District (ISD), will involve the collection of a select few schools across the state to be transferred into a statewide school district with the goal of driving student achievement and school-wide performance.
